The second town on our list of possible locations is Bedford. I know what you are thinking, Bedord, it’s not exactly sexy or Hollywood. We know, but let’s be honest neither are you, so get over it. So what does make Bedford a possible contender for MotD2017?
Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. Bedford Castle was built by Henry I, although it was destroyed in 1224. Bedford was granted borough status in 1165 and has been represented in Parliament since 1265. Bedford is included in the Bedford parliamentary constituency, which includes Kempston and is represented by Richard Fuller. Bedford is well known for its large population of Italian descent. It also has an increasingly large South Asian population, especially Punjabis, and is home to the largest Sikh Gurdwara in the UK outside London.
Bedford is the northern terminus of the Thameslink railway line that runs to London and Brighton.
Bedford is saturated with parks and grounds that you can visit during your stay in the town. Boat trips down the river, to visiting Bedford castle mound and embankment relaxation is never far away. If shopping is more your thing, the main retail centre is the Harpur Centre, but you can enjoy a more local feel by visiting the Arcade and Church Arcade which house independent retailers. Bedford is also a market town and most days there is a market to look around.
As night falls, Bedford has a good mix of bars and clubs to keep the more thirsty among you happy. There is a good mix of traditional taverns through to trendy bars all located within the town centre, and a choice of nightclubs if you can last the pace. There is also a great selection of restaurants with all tastes covered, but due to the large population of Italian descent, that may be the way to go.
There are no shortage of hotels available in Bedford. From the big chains to local gems you will be able to find exactly what you are looking for. Two nights accommodation in a double room (Friday and Saturday) comes in at £120 for the Park Inn by Radisson. There are plenty other option around the £65 per night rate, and obviously more if you don’t mind paying a little more.
One of the big selling points of Bedford for us is getting there. Sitting further East than we have been previously travel should be just as easy no matter where in the UK you come from.
London to Bedford is as little as a 39 minute journey, 3 hours from Norwich and five and a half hours from Glasgow. Coach travel is available for those closer or on a tighter budget with a main station in the heart of the town centre.
Reasonably priced and located fairly for all our attendee’s Bedford sits almost central in our heat map. Not too far from the London PR hub and with good transport links to the rest of the country Bedford has everything we need in a MotD location.
